The Understudy Scheme

The Garsington Opera Understudy Scheme gives our young singers valuable opportunities to work on roles in great detail at a professional level. They observe the principal artists in rehearsal and work closely with our music staff, language coaches and creative teams, so that they are fully prepared should they have a chance to step in at the last moment, be it to enable a crucial rehearsal to continue as planned, or to make their Garsington solo debut in front of an audience.

In 2016 our Eugene Onegin understudies took to the stage in their own right as part of our OperaFirst performance for an audience of local school children, performing the whole opera with full chorus and orchestra. On top of that, all our understudies are given the opportunity to perform at our Showcase performance in London, to an invited audience of conductors, agents and casting directors. These opportunities to display their work always result in several future contracts.
