Toby Spence discusses Idomeneo

Tenor Toby Spence makes his Garsington debut in the title role of our production of Idomeneo next season. In anticipation, we spoke to him about the key themes of the opera and the cast and creative team which is set to bring Mozart’s fateful romance to life at this summer's Festival:
The opera brings themes of fate, destiny, fatherhood and leadership into sharp focus. Mozart's score swings from the majesty and pomp of monarchy to the tender intimacy of young love. Elements of the composer's difficult relationship with his own father are reflected in the magical quartet of the second act where Idomeneo banishes his son, Idamante.
I am very excited to be working with director Tim Albery again and greatly look forward to exploring the drama within the music alongside conductor Tobias Ringborg. Garsington has assembled a strong youthful cast which is set to bring this extraordinary opera to life on one of the most beautiful stages in the world.
