OperaFirst: The Creation
While pupils from local secondary schools were introduced to Eugene Onegin, our primary school project focused on Haydn's Creation. Several primary schools as well as a group of children with special needs had the opportunity to work with Garsington Opera singers and musicians, exploring different creation stories, learning arias and working on their own large-scale performance. For the final showcase they all joined together at Cressex School in High Wycombe to perform for an invited audience.
All the schools involved were invited to Wormsley to see the Rambert dancers and Garsington Opera musicans in their final orchestra rehearsal. Excited by an introduction from conductor Douglas Boyd and the Learning & Participation team, the 140 children were engrossed by the performance and enjoyed the music they had heard in the workshops.
We have had wonderful feedback from the schools involved including the comments below:
Thank you for facilitating this project and ending it in such a fantastic way. The children were completely blown away by the performance yesterday. It was amazing and I think you have a few converts - the children couldn't stop talking about it this morning.

A huge thank you for the opportunity to attend last night's performance at Garsington. I know the children, despite their young age, loved the experience; they sat quite mesmerised during the performance! The whole project has been a fantastic experience for the children, affording them a unique opportunity to work with professional singers and musicians and enter the wonderful world of opera.
