Get involved: Dalia

Performers on stage

Want to try something new, sing as a collective and be creative?

Then this is for you! The opera premieres on stage at Garsington Opera in July 2022 and we’d love you to be involved. You can take part as a performer (aged 9 upwards*) in either the Garsington Opera Youth or Adult Company. We will be holding a series of audition workshops and do not require any prior experience. Existing members have joined us at all levels of singing, from the shower to the stage! The workshop will be a chance to meet the creative team, sing as a group, and have a taste of what it’s like to be part of an opera company. If you would like to take part, please fill in the appropriate application form linked below. Full details can be found linked below.

We are also looking to cast the principal role of Dalia, a girl soprano playing age 9-13. For more information see below.

About the opera

Dalia is a new opera, co-created and performed by 180 community & professional participants, about a refugee Syrian girl who triumphs over adversity to follow her dream: a story which champions diversity through music to highlight what makes us all human.

By composer Roxanna Panufnik, librettist Jessica Duchen and director Karen Gillingham, has been commissioned by Garsington Opera to engage local participants of all ages from diverse backgrounds, with professional and emerging artists for new audiences in a creative community opera.

The opera, premiering in summer 2022, is an original story, developed in close consultation with refugee organisations, sports charities and practitioners. The central character, Dalia – a young girl of 12, arrives in Britain as a refugee from Syria having lost her family in traumatic circumstances. Fostered by a local family, she discovers a passion for cricket. She follows her dream but must contend, however, with racism from the community, battle her demons and make an impossible decision.
