2012 sees a major development in Garsington Opera’s commitment to young,
emerging artists with a weekend residency at West Green House, near
Hook, north Hampshire. For the first time, our emerging artists will
perform a full-length opera - a new production of
The Magic Flute.
Karen Gillingham, a young director who has created energetic pieces with our education programme in recent years, will direct the production. James Burton will conduct the Garsington Opera Orchestra, using Jonathan Dove's imaginitive orchestration for 15 players.

This is a wonderful opportunity for young singers early on in their
professional careers, who have worked with us previously either in the
Garsington Opera Chorus or as understudies or in smaller roles. Mary
Bevan, who will also be singing Zerlina in our production of Don Giovanni this
summer, will sing Pamina. Her sister, Sophie, played the role for us
last year. Ruth Jenkins, who received the 2011 Leonard Ingrams Award for
her role of Papagena in last summer’s production, will sing The Queen
of the Night.
We hope this will be the first of a long collaboration and we encourage patrons and Friends of Garsington Opera to visit West Green House to see the emerging artists from our Studio Programme and experience first-hand the value of this development.
